En milepæl er en afstandsmarkering langs en vej. Milepæle blev ikke kun opsat ved hele antal mil, men ofte også ved halve, kvarte og trekvarte mil. Milepælenes anførte afstande måles fra definerede nulpunkter, gerne markeret med nulpunktsten. I starten var milepæle egentlige træpæle nedsat i jorden, men senere afløstes disse af milesten, selvom ordet milepæl også blev anvendt ved stenmarkeringerne.
Nulpunktet på Sjælland er vist nok Rådhuspladsen i København.

A milestone is a distance marker along a road. Milestones were not only keen on the whole number of mile, but also often by half, quarter and three quarters of a mil. Milestones specified distances measured from defined zeros, like marked with zero stone. In early milestones were real wood poles set in the ground, but later was replaced by these milestones, although the word milestone was also used by stone markers.
