Geocache Description:

This is a quick cache and dash in the Village of Sessay with parking available close by.

Sessay is an ancient settlement with a unique name (Sezai in Domesday). Its main claim to fame today is cricket – hence the copy of the “Father Time” weathervane above the pavilion commemorating the first team’s match at Lords. Thomas Lord, founder of the MCC, was born in Thirsk in 1755. The village got through to the final again in 2010 and were successful this time, winning the trophy at Lords.
The village’s history is rather more colourful. The Dawnay family crest is of a demi-Saracen in armour with a ring in the right hand and a lion’s paw in the left. This was supposedly granted by Richard I in 1192 to Sir William Dawnay for having killed a chief Prince of the Saracens and slain a lion in Palestine. Local anecdote, however, would have it that the lion’s paw is actually a miller’s pick.
Legend has it that Sessay Wood and its environs were inhabited by a celebrated giant, quite amenable to eating anyone who chanced his way. One morning a member of the Dawnay family discovered the monster asleep in the precincts of the New Mills. Seizing the moment and the convenient miller’s pick, he despatched the giant on the spot. The king decreed that the giant-killer should always keep hold of the miller’s pick so all might know that he and his descendents had been given the royalty of Sessay in perpetuity.
