Flood prevention work was carried out on Sandwell Valley in the 1980s. Forge Mill Lake was created as a stormwater retention basin by enlarging an existing depression. The river was dredged to deepen it and the gravel used to construct an island in the lake, which can be seen from from most points around the lake. This evolved into part of a nature reserve, at present leased to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
From this point at cache #15 you can continue to follow the footpath around the lake. You will eventually end up at a fork in the path (if you are walking away from cache #15) where you can choose to return back to Forge Mill Farm (and return back through Sandwell Valley) or continue along the River Thame to the Newton Road (where there are more caches hidden).
This cache consists of a small camo container containing a log and pen.
The nearest car park is Forge Mill Farm, Forge Lane, West Bromwich, B71 3SZ.
Please note: (27th march 2010) A fire destroyed part of the RSPB visitor centre which was undergoing a major refurbishment programme. The centre will be closed until further notice. Access to all caches is still possible.
