Geocache Description:

Fourth in a series of caches started by Nitro929 hidden at former sites of beacons marking the Transcontinental Airmail Route across Nevada. The cache is located near the site of Beacon 28A.

Regular scheduled night service on the Transcontinental Air Mail Route started on July 1, 1924. Operating around the clock, Air Mail was able to cross the nation in 34 hours westbound and 29 hours eastbound.

High-intensity beacons were established approximately 10 miles apart along the airways. Intermediate landing fields were provided every 30 miles along these routes, in the absence of suitable commercial or municipal fields, and each was equiped with a beacon, boundry, approach, obstuction and wind cone lights.

Humboldt Intermediate Field was located just Northeast of this beacon site at 40° 5.136N and 118° 9.371W you can still see the triangle shape on the ground of the field from this cache location. The landing area was said to consist of a triangle sod field measuring 3500' on each side.

The San Francisco-Salt Lake City Airway map shows Beacon 28B at Humbolt Intermediate Field

The 1954 USGS topo map still depicted an Airway Beacon but did not depict anything of an airfield. The airfield was closed at some point between 1945-48.

At time of placement the cache contents were:
FTF pin
Hobby Tool kit
Popup Trash Can
Lanyard
Electro Star
Race car
