The sculpture was
created based upon the local legend of how Hugglescote got its
name. The legend is as follows:
When brown bears
were living in England, a man was being chased by one. In order to
run quicker, he took off his coat. The bear hugged the coat instead
of him and gave rise to the village name HUGGLES COAT.
