This Cache is a log located in the park. Access to it requires a short hike of less than 100 yards, but the ground is soft and uneven. The trail is also on a hillside. The elevation is approximately 2161 feet. The fee for entrance into the park is $10.00 per vehicle.
The purpose of the cache is to locate the specific log out of several on the hillside. Read the sign posted near by, and remember what it says or photograph it.
The purpose is to introduce you to petrified wood. This is a type of fossil. All of the organic materials have been replaced by minerals. It is the result of a process called petrifaction, meaning "to turn to stone". Petrifaction occurs when three major ingredients: wood, water, and mud consisting mainly of volcanic ash are available. The petrifaction process occurs under packed mud when wood is buried under silicate sediments that are low in oxygen content. This low oxygen environment keeps the fallen logs from rapid deterioration. Water, laden with minerals, flow through volcanic ash and deposit the minerals into the plant's cells. These minerals replace cellulose with silicates (usually quartz) turning the wood into stone. The original structure of the wood is preserved down to the microscopic level, literally leaving a very detailed map of the wood, cells and all. No one knows the length of time required for wood to petrify. it can very greatly. The process is based more on conditions such as pH levels and temperature rather than time. The color of the stone depends on what minerals are deposited.
What genus or group did the tress that became our petrified logs probably belong to?
Please report your answer to the park office or via e-mail (vofranger2@mvdsl.com) with a picture of you at the site.
