Geocache Description:

I am working on creating caches that highlight unusual names (and often unique letters of the alphabet)

I love the peaceful network of roads on the southwestern side of Napa, most of which depart from Old Sonoma Road.

More specifically, this cache is part of a series of caches highlighting the characters in the Jewish festival of Purim: Xerxes I; Esther; Vashti, Haaman, and Mordecai.

This cache is a small brown-taped pill bottle. GRC= Guard Rail Cache. Congress Valley Rd is a quiet road, but still be careful.

Mordecai was the elderly cousin of queen Esther of Persia. He was a lesser official who was in charge of the king's gate, meaning that he was responsible to listen and overhear those that might not have the king's or the empires best interest in mind. On one occasion, he overhead a plot to eliminate the king, Xerxes I. He reported this to his cousin, queen Esther, but was not rewarded (as would have been expected). However, later, when Hamaan had become vice-regent of the kingdom, the record of Mordecai's deed was reviewed and Hamaan was forced to parade Mordecai as hero throughout the city. In Persian politics this is especially humorous since Hamaan had already arranged for Mordecai's death because of the Jews' refusal to worship Hamaan as a god.

Purim is the modern Jewish festival that celebrates the victory over Hamaan (The king hung him from the gallows he had created to hang his archnemesis Mordecai from) and the survival of the Jewish nation. It is interesting to note that antisemitism, ethnic profiling, and genocide are not new topics but have plagued our powerful societies for generations.
