How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

To log this cache you must first have logged fifty benchmarks on Geocaching.com.

Cache logs without fifty NGS Benchmark finds shown on your Profile will be deleted!

Because of the challenge, the cache is a C&D with no bushwhacking. The hint is a spoiler, so use it as a last resort.

The cache contains only a log so bring a pen. There is room to pull off the road.

You might ask, "Why should I look for benchmarks? They show on my Profile page, but they won't count in my total cache finds, so, why should I bother?"

When asked, "Why climb Everest?", George Mallory answered, "Because it is there!"

Before we even heard of geocaching, often we'd be hiking or sightseeing and stumble across a bronze disc with numbers and words and just move on. Now I wish we could go back and log them!

When we started caching and were running out of nearby caches, we decided to look for benchmarks. Some were easy, but several required detective work ... measuring distances from various objects. Talk about a treasure hunt! Many of them were historic!

Once, on a coaching trip without a GPS, I realized that I could find benchmarks without one, and had yet another reason to look for them.

Finally, while we've had some interesting experiences caching, there have also been some really memorable ones benchmarking. When you're caching, you try to avoid muggles, but when you're benchmarking you can involve them!

To see why we enjoy them, look at our logs for the following benchmarks: HU2708, AY0213, EJ0229, KW3030, FW0266, AE8327, KW3078, and MB0897.

We're hoping this cache will challenge you to look for Benchmarks and the next time you look at a cache listing you'll click on the "...all nearby benchmarks" link.

As a bonus, this cache is within feet of Benchmark HU1840 #3. Happy hunting!
