Geocache Description:

COMMUNITY CACHE

This cache has historical significance and is now being monitored/looked after by JoJoBeenie on behalf of the Geocaching community. Any queries regarding this cache should be addressed to that geocacher.

This is a great little water hole that always has fresh amazing tasting water flowing all year round.

It is natural mountain spring with a pool of water formed by stones arranged in the shape of a small well, located on the side of the Black Spur Road.

Saint Ronan's Well is an intact representative example of an early Well which is associated with travel across the notoriously difficult Black Spur. Its significance is enhanced by its strategic location on the current Maroondah Highway and near the original road over the Black Spur.

The Well represents the longevity of tourist use of the Blacks' Spur route, demonstrating the past necessity of stopping places and springs, with the present signposting providing evidence of their continuing recognition today.

Saint Ronan's well was one of the many springs leading up the Black's Spur, which was converted into a well. It was an early watering point used by the bullock teams and horses travelling along the Black Spur, and later maintained and managed as a public spring.

The name for the well came from the Book ‘St Ronan’s Well’ by Sir Walter Scott 1832.

I use to pass by this well every weekend for years, on our way up to our property in Taggerty. I would always nag my parents to stop off so I could fill up my drink bottle from the well.

The cache is now a 500ml sistema that is in army camo colours. The cache is still large enough for small swaps and contains some new starting swag along with all other usual's - so please put it to good use.

To retrieve this cache shouldn’t be much of a hassle to most people; you will just need to reach. But apart from that there should be no reasons as to why you won’t come out victorious.

*As many people know who have travelled the black spur road you will know that there are very few places to stop as there is sheer faces on one side and drop off’s on the other. The well has a pull out bay on the side of the road leading to Marysville. If coming from the other direction, (heading to Healesville) I suggest continuing on for 500m and doing a U-Turn at Dom Dom saddle. *

This cache has now been muggled 3 times and is onto its fourth replacement. I can not stress enough the importance on hiding and covering the cache with rocks and leaf litter completely. Please leave it completely hidden.
