Big Mac concretions (LOWER OLIGOCENE, NW-BELGIUM)

'BIG MAC' concretions consist mainly of sandstone, the sand grains were glued together by cement. In all likelihood their growth starts from a small core. If during the growth a less permeable layer is reached, only the horizontal growth goes further. This explains the flattened, but rounded shape (Big Mac) of the larger specimens. The 'BIG MAC' concretions were formed between 35.4 and 29, 3 million years ago. So they are older than the clay of Boom (Rupeliaan) They were dredged in huge quantities between level -8 and -11 in the vicinity of the new sea lock at Wintam.
SEPTARIA
Formed during Oligoveen, above the big mac concretians. Flat, round limeconcretians with a diameter up to about 0.5 m, which typically occur in the Boom clay or Rupeliaan.
By tension cracks which Septaria internally split. The inner golden colour comes from the deposit of pyrite.
The basis for the formation of the concretion is the decomposition of plant and animal residues in the clay layer.
Sometimes, animal or plant fossils occur in the Septaria, eg shells, fish, lobsters and plant remains.

BIG MAC concreties bestaan voornamelijk uit zandsteen, waarbij de zandkorrels aan elkaar werden gekit door middel van cement.
Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid start hun groei vanuit een kleine kern. Wanneer tijdens de groei een minder doorlatende laag wordt bereikt, gaat slechts de horizontale groei verder, wat de afgeplatte, maar ronde vorm van de grote exemplaren verklaart.
De BIG MAC concreties werden gevormd tussen de 35,4 en 29, 3 miljoen jaar geleden. Zij zijn dus ouder dan de klei van Boom.
Zij werden in enorme hoeveelheden opgebaggerd tussen de peilen -8 en -11 in de nabijheid van de sluis in Wintam.
SEPTARIA
Gevormd tijdens het Oligoveen, boven de big-mac cencreties. Platte, ronde kalkconcreties met een diameter tot ca. 0,5 m, die typisch voorkomen in het Rupeliaan of de Boomse klei.
Door spanningen ontstaan krimpscheuren waardoor de septaria inwendig gespleten zijn. De binnenste goudgele kleur is afkomstig door de afzetting van pyriet.
De basis voor de vorming van de concretie is de ontbinding van plantaardige en dierlijke resten in de kleilaag.
Soms kunnen dierlijke of plantenfossielen voorkomen in de septaria, bv. schelpen, vissen, kreeften en plantenresten.
