Geocache Description:

Fernshaw reserve is a popular picnic spot receiving thousands of visitors each year.
It really is a place you should spend some time to enjoy and not treat this as a drive by cahce.

Fernshaw Reserve is the site of an 1860s township strategically located at the base of the Black Spur, and associated with an early route for travellers to the Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. It is also strongly related to the growth in popularity of the mountain ash forests for their recreational and scenic attractions during the late nineteenth century, and is associated with the development of the Healesville-Marysville district as one of Victoria's most popular holiday resorts from the early years of the twentieth century.

A closing down sale was held on the 17th May 1890. Buyers were given 14 days to remove their purchases, the remnants were burnt. After the township's demise in the 1890s, the site continued to be used as a base for walkers and travellers, and its current use as a public recreational reserve reflects its continuing association with travel and recreation from the 1860s through to the present day. The surrounding mountain ash bears testimony to the intensive replanting program undertaken by the MMBW following the devastation caused in the Maroondah Catchment area due to the fires in 1939.

Her Excellency Lady Denman planted the oak tree nearby on 12th April 1913 to commemorate the visit to the area by Queen Mary on the 15th May 1901.

The Cache is a Black 1.5L sistema container. It should be a pretty easy find. There is enough room for moderate sized items so put it to good use.

Please be sure to rehide it well so that it cant be seen by the many muggles that visit the area.
