The famous photograph

[NOR] Om krigsminnet

Kilde: Hole kommune.

The stamp

[ENG] About the war memorial
One summer's day in 1941 Carl Dihle cycled towards Sundvollen. At Portbakken, near the house of Maren Porten, he met his friends Frans Aubert, Egil Breen and Henrik Aubert who were painting "WE WILL WIN" on the asphalt. Dihle took the famous photograph. This slogan was the start of the Norwegian resistance propaganda war against the Germans. The courier Hans Hafnor smuggled the photograph over to England where it became the motif for a postage stamp of which 22 million copies were printed. The stamp was part of a set issued by the Norwegian Government in exile in London on Jan. 1st 1943.

Egil Breen managed to get across to England in 1943. Henrik Aubert edited the illegal newspaper "Hvepsen" ("The wasp"), which was published from Dec. 1940. He was arrested as a hostage for Frans Aubert, together with Kirsten Hveem, who was engaged to Frans in April 1944. Frans Aubert was arrested on April 24th 1944 because he was member of Mil.Org. D 13 Exportgroup (part of the Norwegian Underground Movement) and that he organized refugee transport to Sweden from his advocate office. He was executed together with several fellow prisoners on Feb. 9th 1945 in Akershus Castle as a reprisal for the liquidation of Major General Karl A.N. Marthinsen, who was the leader of the State Police (Stapo). Frans Aubert was shot by Stapo the day after the liquidation of Marthinsen.

After an initiative of the Hole Municipality the slogan was again painted the same place as in 1941. Official opening of the memorial took place on 1 June 2001. Source: Hole Municipality.

[NOR] Om cachen

[NOR] About the cache
There is a small parking spot adjacent to the memorial, on the west side of the road. The cache itself is a well camouflaged micro. It contains only a log. Bring your own pencil. The log may be hard to retrieve, so you may well bring a suitable tool. Take care of the traffic while searcing! After logging, please replace the cache exactly as it was when you found it.
