4.23. Unarchiving a Geocache

The archiving of a geocache is intended to be a permanent status. That is why only community volunteer reviewers and Geocaching HQ staff have the capability to unarchive it. This is done only in rare circumstances and only if it meets the current Geocache Listing Guidelines.

If a geocache is archived by a reviewer or staff for lack of maintenance it will not be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

A nano hidden at the Sydney end of the Great North Walk.

This is the first of a number of caches that I will be hiding along the Great North Walk. The Great North Walk is a walking track which runs from Sydney to Newcastle in New South Wales. The main track, which is 250 kilometres in length, runs between the Obelisk in Macquarie Place in Sydney to Queens Wharf Tower in Bicentennial Park in Newcastle. The southern end of the Great North Walk runs through the Sydney CBD, Woolwich, Hunters Hill, East Ryde and Chatswood West.

This cache, the first in this series of hides, is hidden near the obelisk at Macquarie Place in the Sydney CBD (within the triangular park between Maquarie Place, Bridge Street and Loftus Street). This obelisk is Sydney's oldest surviving public monument of Australia's colonisation. It was erected by Governor Macquarie in 1818 to mark the place from which public roads in the colony were measured and was originally used for surveying. This triangular plot of land was a rare open space within the town that grew up at Sydney Cove after the first European settlement in 1788. The construction of Circular Quay resulted in the extension of streets which took up a large part of the reserve so that the obelisk, which used to be in the centre, is now on one side. While in the park, take a look at the nearby anchor on display which dates back to 1788.

You are looking for a nano cache. As with most city caches, your GPSr is unlikely to be able to compete with the nearby buildings, so I suggest making your way to the obelisk and then begin your search from there (the cache is within 10 metres of the obelisk).

Bring your own pen or pencil and do your best not to be noticed by the many muggles that use this park throughout the day. Good luck!
