Geocache Description:

A short walk around Downend, South Gloucestershire, focussing on WG Grace, the famous cricketer who was born in there. A multi staged cache. A small traditional clip container.

Dr William Gilbert ("WG") Grace, MRCS, LRCP was born 18 July 1848 in Downend House, Downend, near Bristol. He was an English Gentleman player who has been widely acknowledged as the greatest player of all time, especially in terms of his importance to the development of cricket. "WG", played first-class cricket for a record-equalling 44 seasons, from 1865 to 1908, during which he captained England, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, the Gentlemen, MCC, the United South of England Eleven and several other teams. Henry and Martha Grace had nine children, WG was the eighth! He is said to have first handled a cricket bat at the age of 2 years! Dr Grace was a medical practitioner, who qualified in 1879, having trained at St Barts Hospital in London.
From the suggested parking, make your way to your first foray. You've won the toss and elected to bat.

This building was erected by supporters of the local Cricket Club, in memory of Dr WG Grace.
G = whose Club? (number of letters)
H = out for a duck?
Do pop in to watch some of the cricket and ask inside if you can see the gallery of memorabilia they have there. You might also avail yourself of a drink, if you haven’t already found one of the three cafes in Downend. The nearby Anglican Christ Church, Downend, built in 1831 holds memorials and many links with the Grace family. A lot of information on WG can be found on the internet. WG’s sister Blanche married the Christ Church curate Rev John Dann. See (visit link) for more info on the family.
From the Church/Pavillion you should now return to the mural.
Across the road, at N51 29. CFH W002 30. CFD is Downend House, birthplace and early home of WG Grace. Chestnuts, the home pictured behind WG in the mural, has been demolished. Take care to use the crossings. The traffic on the roundabout can be very busy.
From here you will set out for your final turn with the bat. A few more runs and you'll be home.
Go to N51 29.FGF W002 29.EAA
Lookout! Howzat! You've been caught by the Keeper! Time to retire for a cup of tea. Well done!
The cache is a small traditional clip lid container.

Useful equipment... get a ball,a bat and go and be Pieterson, Boycott, Botham...or even WG. Have fun, like my Dad and family did in those far off days of my childhood
