Geocache Description:

THIS IS A LETTERBOX CACHE. THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES. As a letterbox cache the enclosed stamp is NOT a trade item. Bring your own stamp pad.

This cache was placed on Memorial Day 2010 in honor of all those who have served in the military. These men and woman have given years to service. Please remember too those were maimed both physically and psychologically.

The coordinates will take you to a tree stump on the grounds of the Oakland Veterans Memorial building. At the base and partially embedded in the stump by growth is a plaque commemorating the planting of a tree in honor of “John Dumser. Commander of the California-Nevada Division of the Grand Army of the Republic.” The GAR was a fraternal organization of Union veterans of the American Civil War. This monument was dedicated in 19XY. Hmm, maybe that is significant.

>>Since the plaque has been stolen I will let you know that the dedication year was 1947

From the stump walk to Grand Avenue, roughly in front of you if you’re looking at the above plaque. Turn right and walk down the sidewalk towards Harrison Avenue until you cross a small open portion of a creek. Put your hand on the last fence post as you cross the creek. Turn right. Walk along the fence adjacent to the creek counting X + Y fence posts, including in your count the first post at the corner by the sidewalk. When your reach fence X + Y, remember this fence post! Turn to your left, you will see a granite memorial stone.

Go to the memorial stone and read the plaque on the opposite side. This is a monument to the “California Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the 8th Army” from the “War with Spain”. Companies A through M were mustered from various cities throughout northern California. For this cache assign each company’s letter a number with A = 1 and M = 13. Note the letter of the company mustered from Oakland and convert that to a number = Z.

With your back to the backside of the monument, look back to fencepost X + Y. In a straight line, take “Z” paces back to your fence post. You are now at the cache location.

Congrats to Gealabhan on the FTF, within about 10 hours of posting.
