Geocache Description:

On Rt. 151 in Moodus, CT. No parking lot, but room for several vehicles just past the gatehouse. When I visited there was a chain across the road; hopefully this will be removed so paddlers can access the launch on the Salmon River. Terrain difficulty is based on walking from the entrance down the paved road; only one fairly steep, but short section; less than a mile round trip. You are looking for a medium container close to the trail; please rehide as found so it’s not muggled.

***Congrats to mr.miggle for FTF*** Elm Camp, Ted Hilton’s Resort, Frank Davis Resort, and Sunrise Resort. All of these names have been used to describe this 146-acre property over the years. Fortunately for us, today it is a state park, though I don’t know what the state will call it. Ted Hilton was a taxi driver in the 1930’s. After taking groups of people from Hartford to resorts in Moodus, he decided that he wanted to run his own country resort. So he bought Elm Camp and over the years developed one of the town's top resorts, on the banks of the Salmon River. In its glory days, during the 1940s and 1950s, Moodus was called the "Catskills of Connecticut", with more than 30 resorts in town. Some interesting 50’s era postcards can be seen by clicking on the Related Web Page link. During the late 70’s and 80’s, it was known as the Frank Davis Resort, and most recently, Sunrise Resort. 2008 was the last year of operation, after 92 years as a classic country resort. Judging from several online postings, many generations of families enjoyed vacations here over the years. We are indebted to the Johnson family, the last owners, for selling it to the state instead of a private developer. The DEP intends to incorporate Sunrise into the adjacent Machimoodus State Park, but a full opening of the resort will need a private partner and capital investment in the infrastructure. While walking past the deserted cottages and buildings, I couldn’t help feeling like I was in a ghost town and wondered if there were eyes watching from the windows. Hoping this will be the first of several caches in our new park. Skippermark has kindly supplied a link to photos he took during a recent visit. They are really interesting and serve an important purpose in capturing a location at a certain time. See them at http://photos.skippermark.com/Other/Sunrise-Resort/12399741_EnNKu
