Geocache Description:

Another short class

Lochiel School first had lessons with 15 pupils in 1880 but there are no records that can place the location. Classes where first held at this site in 1882 with enrolments at thirty four and the school had been built to accomidate fourty. The teachers most of whom were women , lived in the residence attatched to the school. One exception though was a Miss Julia Stevens(my great aunt) whos home was situated one mile east of Snowtown. She rode horse-back from home to teach at the school from 1893-1896 until she met a local Mr Sinclair.
By 1924 most of the students attending the school came from Lochiel so the school closed at the end of that year and it was arranged to have lessons taught in the Town Hall then the Methodist Kindergarten until the new school was built in 1930.
The school building was pulled down and re-erected as the Lochiel School,at Lochiel on the school reserve land in Ellis Street. The building that is in the background is the old teachers residence, which is still occupied so do take care.
