PUTKILAHTI-RUSKEAPERÄ (698 ha) kuuluu valtakunnalliseen soidensuojeluohjelmaan. Kohde on myös liitetty kansainvälisesti merkittävien kosteikkojen luetteloon eli ns. Ramsar-kohteeksi. Lisäksi P-R on Corine-kohde
Järvi on kokonaisuudessaan matala, minkä vuoksi sinne on kehittynyt linnustolle soveliaita ruovikoita. Ruskeaperä on yhteydessä Putkilahteen kapean, osin ruopatun väylän kautta. Järveä ympäröivillä soilla on parikymmentä erilaista suotyyppiä, joista runsaimpia ovat rämeet ja yhdistelmätyypit. Järven luoteispuolella sijaitsee turvetuotantoalue, josta valuu vesiä alueelle.
Järvi ja suoalueet muodostavat yhdessä merkittävän kokonaisuuden, joka antaa mahdollisuuden monipuolisen linnuston esiintymiselle. Järven ympäristössä esiintyvät suot muodostuvat monipuolisista suotyypeistä, joissa vallitsevina esiintyvät erilaiset nevatyypit.

PUTKILAHTI-RUSKEAPERÄ is included in the national Bird Wetland Conservation Programme and in the national Mire Conservation Programme. The area is also included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance and it is a CORINE site.
The entire lake is shallow, encouraging the growth of reedbeds suitable for various birds. Ruskeaperä is connected with Putkilahti via a narrow, partly-dredged canal. P-R is flanked by mires. They represent around 20 different mire types, the most common being Scots pine mires and mixed mires. To the northeast of the lake there is a peat extraction area, from where run-off water flows into the lake.
The lake and the mires together constitude an area that supports a wide diversity of birds. The mires around the lake include various types, with different kinds of fens dominating the area.
