The cache is placed in the former location of the 45th Street bridge. This was a totally wooden bridge that spanned the Missouri Pacific Railroad track spur that ran from Union, NE to downtown Lincoln near Memorial Stadium. My friends and myself used to spend much of our time either hanging around this bridge or the railroad tracks (at the time) nearby. It was always a great fun to see the trains go by. One train always came by in the morning going towards downtown and another would come back in the evening on the return run back to Union. Switch engines making deliveries would usually pass by at least once a day as well.
This bridge was torn down in the mid 1960's. I am not sure of the reason why except it was older and completely made of wood. I have not noticed any remains. They were probably removed when the Mopac trail was created.
See cache GC1BAP5 - 12 Ton Bridge. The 45th Street Bridge looked much like this one except it was much smaller. If anyone has any old photos or memories of this bridge please send me a e-mail or mention it in the logs.
