Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates at the top of the page are not for the cache, but are for the centre of Saughall Massie, with nearby roadside parking. You can do the stages in any order to suit yourself, however to minimise walking I’d suggest stages in the order D-B-C-A/E–G–F-H. Enjoy your walk around Saughall Massie!

Dating a building by inscription is a long tradition, although not many of the actual architects get to have their names adorning the structure. The trouble with inscriptions, useful though they are, is that you cannot be sure that they are right (many have been added by later owners) or that they date more than a particular feature or phase of development. The datestone has to be treated with the same critical eye as the rest of the building.

The final cache is a small clip lock box situated along one of the many footpaths, which surround the village. There are other caches close by that you may wish to find whilst here. They are “Thomas Brasseys First Bridge”, “Lt J. F. Simpson” and “Under Phil’s Nose”.

To find the co-ordinates of this final location you will need to note down some dates and substitute them into the formula below. Make sure however, that you are at the correct location, have the correct date and enter the information with care.

Please note, all the dates (4-digit year numbers) can be seen from the roadside. Most have initials as well as the date so they are listed with the waypoints so you know you have found the correct date. These roads do get busy to take special care with geokids and geopets.

The final cache can be found at: - N 53° 2A.BCD W 003° 0E.FGH

• The digit needed for the letter A is found at N 53° 23.362 W 003° 07.420
(This is the same date as is used to find the value of E)

A = 3rd digit of that year = _______ (if date obscured, A=G-B)

• The digit needed for the letter B is found at N 53° 23.412 W 003° 07.447

B = 2nd digit - 3rd digit of that year = _______

• The digit needed for the letter C is found at N 53° 23.394 W 003° 07.435

C = 2nd digit of that year. = _______

(This is the same date as is used to find the value of A)
