Gloucester Business Park: Bridge to Nowhere Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mzebonga: In the months prior to this cache going missing, I considered the future of this cache: for a relatively mundane cache, it has had a long life at just under 7 years and has been the first find for a good number of cachers.

However, I think it's probably time to say goodbye now and make way for something a bit fresher that can bring cachers back a second time! The bridge very definitely goes somewhere now (if Cooper's Edge can be considered a "somewhere") so the reference makes less and less sense with every passing year.

Thanks to everyone who found it.

Geocache Description:

A magnetic cache on the edge of Gloucester Business Park.

Gloucester Business Park is a relatively new development on the outskirts of Gloucester. Largely defined by the presence of a large supermarket and various distribution hubs, it also borders on the Cooper's Edge residential area.

The Business Park is easily accessible from the M5 at Junction 11a and can offer weary travellers the opportunity to pitstop for food or a night's rest at the local Inns.

The Park itself is based on the old airfield for the Gloster Aircraft Company where Frank Whittle's Gloster E.28/38 turbojet underwent some of it's taxiing trials. Some remnants from the old airfield are still visible in the area along with an old WW2 gun emplacement at the top of nearby Nut Hill (GC1DZBE).

The Park also has access via footpaths to Cooper's Hill (GC79CB), where the annual cheese rolling event takes place.

About the cache
For many years the road from Lobley's Drive into Cooper's Edge and Gloucester Business Park led nowhere, the bridge that had be built some years before merely came to an end after it crossed over the M5. During that time, it was known locally as the "Bridge to Nowhere".

At the time, it connected people who lived in Hucclecote and Abbeymead to the footpaths in the other side of the motorway (which can still be used to get to Upton St Leonards and Nuthill), whereas it has now become something of a rat run for people collecting parcels from the local Post Office depot or buying their groceries from the nearby supermarket.

  • Parking could be a problem for those of you looking to cache and dash!
  • The road can be busy at times so please take care when crossing; bridge is slightly humpbacked and can leave you a bit unsighted.
  • The cache should be relatively easy for all ages, although, younger cachers may need help due to the cache being affixed with quite strong magnets.
  • You shouldn't have to leave the pavement to make the find but may have to briefly brave some brambles.
  • You shouldn't be bushwhacking down by the motorway!
  • Please watch for muggles and make sure you replace the cache out of sight.

Happy caching!

Congratulations FTF!
