Geocache Description:

Traditional cache located on the opposite of the road from the site of the Giffnock Tudor Cinema.

Cache is in a clear plastic container. Mind the muggles!

The Giffnock Tudor cinema was built in 1936 as a "Super Cinema". From "Builder" magazine of 21 February 1936 "The Crescent Cinema Company Limited is to erect a cinema with accommodation for 2,000 persons, dance hall, restaurant etc in Kilmarnock Road Giffnock. Plans are being prepared by Messrs Lennox and MacMath F/FRIBA 103 Bath Street, Glasgow. No contracts have been placed."

It opened in December of that year and closed in 1962. The current building was built by Argyle Foods in the 1970s and opened as a Presto. When Argyle Foods took over the UK operation of Safeway, the store was rebranded as such. Following the takeover of Safeway by Morrisons in 2004, it was again rebranded again. However subsequently Morrisons opened a new store a few hundred yards closer to Glasgow City Centre and closed this site. It then stood empty and forlorn until Whole Foods Market opened their first UK store outside of London on 16th November 2011 (see photo below).

Well done to the Sweeney Toddlers - FTF on 7th June 2010.

This postcard was taken from a Glasgow Museum of Transport publication, and is described as: "Standard Tram No. 156, Built 1910-15, Livery c.1959". The Tudor Cinema can be seen in the background.
