Geocache Description:

A Countryside Panorama by The Thanet Finders is an easy-to-find micro cache in beautiful countryside near the picturesque village of Herne.

It can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a circular route, taking in other caches in nearby Maypole and Hoath, as well as East Blean Wood - part of the ancient and internationally important Blean Wood.

The cache is a 35mm film canister hidden close to the footpath in area with stunning views of the Kent countryside. We recommend you bring some insect repellent, especially in the summer months!

From the cache site, you can easily see Herne Windmill, Crowdown Wood and the ancient East Blean Wood. The fields are an oasis of buttercups, daisies and dandelions. You'll also hear birds tweeting in the trees and see an abundance of white butterflies.

From the recommended parking at the end of Ridgeway Road, the cache site is a gentle 15-20 minute stroll.

You can easily extend the walk to a circular walk, taking in the villages of Maypole and Hoath (and several nearby caches including GC11R97 Crowdown Woods, GC2776X Red Phone Box #24 and GC1C7N6 Church Micro 265 - Hoath). From the cache site, walk down Oldhawe Hill, cut through Beacon Wood and turn right when you reach Maypole Road. You can then hunt for the Red Phone Box micro in the village and perhaps stop off for a drink and a bite to eat in the nearby Prince of Wales pub (highly recommended!) Continuing your walk, don't be tempted to use the footpath as a shortcut to the Church Micro at Hoath as it's been cut off by an electric fence and a horse's paddock! Instead, follow the Roman Road through Maypole and turn left (signposted to Hoath). After collecting the cache, head back to the Roman Road junction, cross over the road and walk up a small hill to Knave's Ash. Take the footpath on your right and follow the trail through East Blean Wood - an ancient coppice woodland that is part of Blean Wood and is home to birds including woodpeckers, nightingales and nightjars. You may even be lucky and spot the rare heath fritillary butterfly. After a stroll through the woods, you'll come out near Ridgeway Farm and your starting point.

The RSPB website has an excellent guide to Blean Wood, including a species guide and a list of forthcoming events. Alternatively, visit this website. You can help restore and maintain Blean Wood by visiting the Kent Wildlife Trust website.

This micro was one of the 'seed' caches that started life in the now archived GC1JFJZ From Little Acorns cache by Unknown Hero.
