Geocache Description:

A short drive from John Deere Junior High School.

Background
I was in the area visiting my father and I drove by John Deere Junior High School where I was a student for 7th-9th grades. (Yes, back then it was a Junior High School rather than a Middle School.) Thinking about all the fun I had there and all the things I learned I thought I would share some with you. (OK, not the stuff I shared with my therapist.)

I remember having to learn math of various types including basic, geometry, pre-algebra and algebra one. (I wish they had taught geocaching ciphers.) I took some of those concepts to create a simple puzzle. So sharpen you math and cipher skills, break out you protractors and have fun using that math you swore you'd never need to know once you got out of school.

The Puzzle
To find the cache you will need to figure out three points of an equilateral triangle. (Points 1, 2 & 3) Point 1 is the posted coordinates; point 2 is determined using the information below and point 3 is the final. Once you have figured out point 2 you will have to plot point 3 of the equilateral triangle. You will have two options for the final. Use the geochecker tool below to make sure you go to the correct one.

It is a common misconception that the advance math we learn in school we will never use in “real” life. And yet I find myself using algebra all the time. OK, maybe it is mostly pre-algebra stuff, but I still use it. To determine point 2 keep in mind the following truths: A+B=C and 2F=L.

Solve this for point 2:
N 41 29. [M-H] [G+C-J] [W-A-Q] W 090 31. [(P/H)+C] [L/B] [(F+Z)/H]

Now that you know point 1 and point 2 you can figure out point 3 of the equilateral triangle. Use geochecker to confirm you are headed to the right spot.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

Good luck and good caching,

Loch Cache
