Tanner peat bog is 96 ha large and is Austria's largest bog. It is situated in Liebenau at 930 m above sea level. It sits on Weinsberger Granite and is 10 m thick.
Tanner peat bog has never been used for economic reasons. Only a dam was built to collect water for floating wood. The pond that developed is called Rubener Teich (pond). It gets its water from the Tannerbach (Tanner rivulet). This rivulet comes from the bog, so its water is dark brown. Swimming and fishing is permitted in the pond. Tanner peat bog developed after the last ice age, about 10 - 12000 years ago. It derives its water only from precipitation, it is a so called raised bog.
There are a lot of rare animals and plants, like the marten, the weasel, the black grouse, the wood grouse or the long-eared owl. Plants which live in Tanner peat bog are the knee pine, the heather, the fenberry, the bog bilberry or the common sundew.
The formation of bogs:
After the ice of the last ice age had melted, bogs have started to form in Europe. Due to the lack of oxygen and the high acidity in the ever-humid substrate dead plant material cannot dematerialise and peat develops. In the course of time the peat grows up to a level where the ground water cannot reach the centre of the wetland and so it becomes rain-fed. The bog keeps forming peat and a dome of peat develops. This part is the raised bog. The building of a raised bog is very slow, it takes centuries to millennia.
The main peat building plants are peat mosses which do not have any roots. They only grow very slowly, the lower part builds the peat. Peat only grows 1 mm a year!
When bogs have a sufficient supply of water, they keep growing. They are biotopes that have a positive mass balance, i.e. more organic material is formed than decomposed.
Due to the extreme living conditions flora and fauna of the raised bog have adapted and specialised to be able to survive in this habitat. The bog is rather unattractive for mammals, but there is a large variety of protozoa, insects, spiders, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
To log this Earthcache send us the answers to the following questions:
1. Name 2 strategies of bog plants to protect themselves from evaporation. Look below the German word "Verdunstungsschutz" on one of the information signs near the Rubener pond.
2. Which number does the Melampyrum paludosum have on the information sign?
You may log your find right away. We will get in touch with you if there is anything wrong with your answers.
It would be nice, if you posted a photo of you with your GPSr from the lookout in the centre of the bog or from the Lehrmüller Mauern (granite formation).
Don't forget that Tanner peat bog is a nature reserve. You are not allowed to leave the track, which is both well-maintained and signposted. Just follow the signs saying "Moorwanderweg" (bog trail).
We recommend sturdy and waterproof shoes.
