It is believed bison crossed the land bridge from Asia to North America 10,000 years ago becoming the largest land animal in North America and dominating the continent from the ice age to the coming of the Europeans. Aboriginal people crossed the same land bridge and viewed the bison as a special gift from the Great Spirit as the bison provided them with food, shelter, tools and fuel for thousands of years. Historical accounts suggest there were 60 million bison in 1800 and by 1899 there were less than 1,000.
The complete loss of the species was averted through the efforts of ranchers and conservationists. Small herds were kept in protected parks and on ranches until the 1980’s when the herds had recovered sufficiently to reintroduce bison to the market.
By 2005 it was estimated that there were over 500,000 bison on ranches and farms in
North America. Manitoba has the third largest herd in Canada with 10% of the animals. There are 180 operators raising in excess of 15,000 head in 2002.
The bison has been part of the province of Manitoba logo since 1984 as a symbol of strength and loyalty. In 2006 the bison was stylized to refresh the government’s visual identity and support the new province-wide branding initiative ”spirited energy”.
