While you are here...stand upon the massive rocks that were laid here over 150 years ago and imagine as boats passed right through. This is a lock and allowed the boats to lower and raise to get around the uneven terrain in the state (the canals were built long after the earth was determined to be round & bumpy rather than flat!). Here is information about canal locks and how they work:

How a canal lock works

Here is a little history of the Ohio canals and the area:

On July 4, 1825, at Licking Summit south of Newark, work began on the Erie Canal. Two weeks later at Middletown ground breaking was held for the Miami Canal. At the same time work began on the Ohio & Erie Canal from Portage Summit (Akron) to Cleveland.

On July 3, 1827, two years after the ground breaking, Governor Trimble and the canal commission boarded a canal boat in Akron and the next day arrived in Cleveland. By 1832 the entire 308 mile route of the Ohio-Erie was open to traffic.

Lockbourne is a village in Franklin County, in the Columbus metro area. The community name combines "lock" for the canal locks and "bourne," for Col. James Kilbourne, who laid out the village
