Kind of melancholy...
In 1865 the Bonita Lake area was a pasture & the forage was so good there that Fort Stanton used the location for grazing its war horses. There was also a small silver mining town there in later years name of Angus, including all the amenities, such as a cemetery. The silver played out in the early 20th century & the post office closed in 1911. The El Paso & Northeastern Railroad constructed a pipeline for water from the Rio Bonito to its trains traversing the dry desert lowlands around Carrizozo. This water resource was enhanced with the construction of Bonito Dam, which formed Bonito Lake, whose waters flooded the old town site. By 1957 Bonito Lake had also become the major water source for Alamogordo. Alas, as the time came for it to be a reservoir, the cemetery had to be relocated so guess where it now is (hint, hint, wink, wink).
