Geocache Description:

Use great stealth here - avoid night as you might be called in as a prowler.

Lincoln County was formed in 1869. Fort Stanton, established in 1855, allowed settlement of southeastern New Mexico & was integral to settling the Ruidoso Valley by providing protection & enforcing law & order. Paul Dowlin was an enterprising fellow who pretty much got corrupt Lawrence Murphy booted out of his position at Fort Stanton as Post Trader, which position Dowlin then took.

Dowlin later became an early resident of Ruidoso & his land encompassed much of where the Ruidoso village is today. In 1868 he built a mill on the Ruidoso River for grinding grain. Ruidoso was originally known as Dowlin's Mill. The name Ruidoso, Spanish for Noisy Water, was in use by 1882. Tourism & related enterprises remain the cornerstones of the Ruidoso economy. Incorporated in 1945, the village is bordered by Lincoln National Forest. The beauty of the forested mountains, the mild summer weather & the ski opportunities in winter…well…what more can we say…?
