A short walk in the Tararua Ranges.
Starting from Holdsworth Lodge, carry on along the gravel track, cross the bridge over the Atiwhakatu Stream, follow the signpost to the Holdsworth Lookout, continue up a forest clad spur to a clearing with magnificent views of the Tararua Ranges. This track is muddy after rain and is steep in places. The sign said 1 hour up but we did it in 3/4 hour, then 1/2 hour down.
If you have sharp eyes you might be able to pick out the site of the "PA PUNANGA". This was a site where the local maori hid when invading tribes approached. This site was used prior to 1840.
Some maps have this track incorrectly marked.
The weather in Tararua Forest Park can change quickly.
• Warm, waterproof clothing, food and drink should be carried, even on short walks.
• Sturdy shoes or walking boots should be worn on tramping tracks.
