Geocache Description:

Another interesting piece of Pitt Meadows History.
July 2014- Please note this cache has changed to a micro hidden well above the flood waters. Please put it back where you found it so others can enjoy.

The legend of Slumach's gold is probably one of Canada's most famous lost mine stories. It has inspired prospectors, mystery seekers, movie makers and book writers over the past 120 years. Slumach was a First Nations Katzie Indian hunter and hermit of sorts who lived in a cabin on the south end of Pitt Lake near Widgeon Slough. Stories tell that Slumach had a secret gold mine somewhere in the Pitt Lake area. Unfortunately he died before he could share his secret with anyone. The gold has never been found to this day.
Whatever the legend, historical records show that on this spot in September of 1890, Slumach confronted some men at the mouth of the Lillouete slough (the Alouette River and slough was originally called the Lillouete ) and fired his shotgun at point blank range into another First Nations Indian called Charlie Bee killing him dead on the spot. Slumach escaped into the bush and was later convinced to surrender by relatives. Four months later in January, 1891 he was hanged by the neck until dead at the BC Provincial gaol in New Westminster. Some say he as "railroaded to the gallows" and Slumach's spirit does not rest to this day. Locals claim that on dark moonlit nights Slumach and Charlie Bee can be seen reenacting the fatal moment at this spot.
