Geocache Description:

When I placed this cache my intention was to visit and place a cache on the Summit of Crooked Edge Hill. However on reaching Crooked Edge Hill I came to the conclusion that it was such an uninteresting place that it didn't warrant a cache.

Fortunately completely by chance I came across this, and as soon as I saw it I thought "CACHE". What exactly is it? Well to be honest I am not sure. If any loggers can provide more info I would very interested to read.

Reading Dave Lane's excellent Winter Hill Scrapbook I have come to the conclusion that this is what Dave Lane refers to as the "Drift". i.e. the former open seam of Mountain Mine that is been commandeered for water extraction purposes.

Mountain Mine was the name given to the coal mine that was operated from 1860-1908 on the summit of Winter Hill. To this day there remains a fascinating series of tunnels and adits below the surface of the hill. There is a rumour that one goes to my home village of Blackrod! Read all about them and the people who have explored them in Dave's book.
