The nearby establishment is well-known for it's chicken/egg related theme. Until about a year ago they always had free-range chickens living outside. My family adopted the last 2 of a clutch of 13 chickens.
We, with no knowledge, experience or background with chickens, ended up with a hen (Raven) and a rooster (Sioux-Sioux). They've been delightful pets.
Raven is just starting to set her 3rd clutch of 13 eggs. In about 3 weeks we'll have more baby Sioux-Sioux and Raven hentertainment. We don't eat the eggs. We don't eat the chickens. We've managed to find "pet" homes for all our chicks so far.
What we've learned is that the adult chickens that used to live here usually roosted on the outside window sills, oblivious to the activities of the people on the other side of the glass. They (the chickens) seemed to really enjoy themselves and the people inside couldn't help but smile at these barnyard animals existing and adapting so well in such a busy area.
Some of the adults would fly into trees at night, to roost. Just recently I was told that most species of chickens do not fly. Ours do. At night they like to roost on our wisteria arbor. When Raven is ready to sit on her eggs they are bedded down inside the "Bunny Barn" so predators cannot bother the hen or the eggs.
This cache is a simple find. Timing the grab might be the biggest challenge. Think like a chicken and don't let yourself get caught! Does the name rooster come from the fact that chickens are roost-ers?
