It is sometime during the 90’s, well, 1698 to be exact. You are standing just outside the castle, the ox wagon is ready to move and you call yourself a Vryburgher with the means to go wherever you want to go. Just now, the sun came up behind those far away, wild, unknown mountains to the East. But that’s not your destination for today; no, too far. No one will ever be able to travel that far in one day.
You see the wild and dangerous road ahead, if this can be called a road or even a track, through the mostly unknown territory towards the Tygerberg and after that, the moving sand dunes.
Just over there, behind the Tygerberg, on the farm “ De Tijgerbergen” (Altydgedacht) lives the beautiful Elsje van Suurwaarden, the owner of the farm, which was just recently given to her by Simon van der Stel. You have the coordinates and are very tempted to go there, maybe just for a glass of wine?
The sound of a track whip calls you out of your daydreams and you can see the span of oxen are ready to go. The “voorloper” is in place, waiting for your signal, to go. The road ahead is dangerous; many wild animals might be waiting for you and the sand is loose and deep. You can only manage 12 miles today and there is only one place where you can stay and outspan; you must find that place! The locals call it “Hardekraaltjie” because it is the only place with a hard surface in that area, which is otherwise surrounded by soft and loose sand. A small little stream is running past, the perfect place to stay, but will you find it? You don’t know, but there is no way of turning back, the journey must begin!
