+ The Package Theory +
++++++++++++++++++
This is my father’s theory. Thought I would share.
Everybody comes with a “package”. Within this package is all the things that makes up our entirety: looks, wealth, sense of humor, social skills, health, intelligence, musical ability, artistic skills, etc.
When looking for a mate, our package is what we use to put ourselves out there. We go out and look for the very best package we can get, equal to or better than our own. When courting, we are really checking out each other’s package to decide whether to bond or to move on.
This is why sometimes you may see a goofy looking guy with a great looking woman (or visa versa). Maybe he/she has something in his/her package (like wealth perhaps) that makes their packages an even trade for the good looks. Some people are likely to judge the other’s appearance right away and never look any deeper into the package.
One mistake commonly made by young people is when one thinks they can upgrade or change the other’s package (known as the Package Potential theorem) expecting the package to improve later on. But packages rarely change significantly, and those relationships are doomed to fail from the get go. It is possible for packages to change gradually, like a person’s looks over time maybe, but generally the package is what it is.
Can you think of couples out there whose packages are completely out of balance, yet they keep it together for the long run? Probably not. Maybe even your own partner, or your own folks, look at how their packages compare to one another and it worked or maybe it didn't. Makes sense, right?
This is where Dad always pauses, letting it sink in before pulling the floor out from under your feet:
Everything I just told you, the package, it is actually a big lie. A good, lasting relationship will have nothing to do with what’s in the package. What makes for a successful, long term pairing comes down to VALUES. As a person, what do you really value: Family? Honesty? Caring? Commitment? Love? Integrity? Respect? Vision? Optimism? Friendship? Son, that’s the ticket. Having each other’s values in total alignment is what makes a relationship work. And as usual, Pops is always right.
