An exploration of the mineral trials on Cronk Fedjag. Good shoes or boots recommended as the "paths" can be wet and muddy at times.
Hill-man returns south. Having spent the winter of 2009/10 in a cold and damp camp at the head of Glen Dhoo Hill-man has come South in search of warmth and wealth. He has heard of great riches to be found in the mineral deposits of the southern uplands and has determined to try his luck at prospecting for precious metals, or failing them, anything of saleable value!
Unfortunately for Hill-man this area is barren of minerals, although patches of spar have raised hopes of rich veins. The long trench near the cache area appears to be an abandoned trial, presumably along the line of an outcropping of spar. It can be reasonably assumed the desired metals would be lead and silver as found in other southern mines. The reasonably good mines at Snuff-the-Wind and Glen Rushen are not far across the valley, while the rich Foxdale complex is a little further distant. Trials and mines have been made down the valley at Glen Maye, and a small deposit of antimony was worked-out at Niarbyl. There are other traces of trials around Cronk-ny-Arrey-Laa, and even on the cliffs near the Sloc, though this is now not visible on the surface, even from out at sea.
Hill-man will get no joy from slate either, as the one or two small quarries around here produce a soft slate, which whilst it cleaves easily is riddled with faults and small cross-veins of the harder rock so rendering it useless for roofing slates of any size. The rock is too soft for road-stone as it quickly crumbles into dust, which washes away in wet weather. There is a good exposure of the slate beds in the larger of the two quarries near the cache site. The large quarry near the Round Table produces hardcore/farm-track material.
To reach this cache, start at the small gate at the top of the Eary Cushlin track, there is the first micro. That will give you the coordinates for the final. If attempting this multi in fog or at night (or even both if you're desperate!) take care as the workings have vertical unmarked edges. NB. coordinates start N54, W004. there might not be room in the micro for all digits! The final is a yellow box with a red screw-top,well hidden amongst stones. As always please reseal and hide well both stages. The final is well away from the bigger drops/edges.
