Geocache Description:

This is a nanocache.

The smokestack and water tower to the southwest are left from the Crosby Lumber Company. In 1884 the town of Dayton was established in honor of David Day who gave the right of way for the railroad. In 1917 the Foster Creek Lumber and Manufacturing Company established Stephenson in honor of George and Fred Stephenson, the founders of the company. The company operated until 1931 when it closed because of the Great Depression. In 1934 L. O. Crosby opened the Crosby Lumber Company and renamed the town Crosby. The sawmill operated as the Crosby Lumber Company until it was purchased by St. Regis Paper Company in 1965. It was finally closed in 1989.
The town of Crosby was at one time the largest town in Amite County but since the closing of the mill it only has three businesses left.
