Cache is placed in the churchyard (cemetery) so please exercise respect. Though many of the graves are older dating back to the early 1900s, there are a few more recent ones here.
The church itself is small and in a very rural setting on the back roads of West Lincoln, a very peaceful area.
If anyone knows anything about the history of this church, would love to hear it. I looked for a cornerstone to see the age but couldn't find it. It appears it is still an active church.
Pin for FTF.
Thanks to some fellow cachers, some further info on the history of this little church:
"I found a date on the church that said 1949 in case your wondering." (Stinger503)
Merritts United Church is my husband's family's church, and has been for many years. We were married in the church in 1994 and while the congregation is dwindling, the church is still in active use (there's a service there every Sunday, except during the summer months). Both of my husband's grandmothers were buried in the cemetery within the last year (sadly).
As for some history of the church, it was originally built in 1855, but has undergone two major remodels in 1901 and 1949. The church was built on land donated by my husband's great-great grandfather (David Merritt). The church originally had two turrets (steeple towers) on the front, but were removed during the 1949 remodel when a basement was added. The church has maintained many beautiful stained glass windows over the years. There were frequent social and fundraising events that included things like an Oyster supper, crokinole parties, card parties, and beef suppers to name a few. The annual beef supper is still an ongoing event every November.
On the second Sunday in June every year, the church celebrates its anniversary with a special service." (TheKillinsClan)
