Geocache Description:

The Castle is built on top of a precipitous hill, over the north-western end of the Old (Upper) Town of Kyparissia, probably at the location of the ancient acropolis of Cyparissia. The castle dates back to the Byzantine era. In 1205, when Cyparissia was already renamed to Arcadia, because of the large number of Arcadians who settled there during the raids of the Slavs (7th - 8th century), it was occupied by the Franks. In 1430 it became part of the Despotate of Morea where it remained until its occupation by the Turks, in 1460.

Its shape is rectangular and follows the form of the terrain. A dividing wall seperated the outer (southern) enclosure from the inner (northern) one. The walls are vertical, interruptedby four-sided towers. After the introduction of gunpowder, the wall were reinforced with the small crescent-shaped bastin on the north-western corner (15th - 16th century) and with a "scarpa" and canon-holes on the inner dividing wall (17th century). The stelltment of Arcadia extended mainly outside of the castle, but Turkish traveller Evliyia Tselebi, in 1668, mentioned 80 houses in the castle. A square building next to the entrance gate is identified as a small mosque.

The Cache is located next to a ground-wall to the old fortress tower. You have to bend outside the fence to get to it. Please hide it very good, after your log, as it would be destroyed if found.
