Geocache Description:

The Victoria Stamping Battery site at Waikino is now ruins and an interesting place. Park nearby at S 37d 24.839 E 175d 46.744 where the train tracks remain along with a station cafe. (You must try the raspberry tart!) Walk to the Southwest to a tunnel that goes under the road and then a bridge over the river to the site. The cache is hidden in an easy place to find in a clear plastic container obstructed from view. Have fun exploring the remains of the battery.

The Waihi Goldmining Company acquired the Martha mine at Waihi in 1891, new reefs were discovered so regularly that it almost seemed as though there was no end to the payable ore. The company’s two plants in Waihi could not cope and it was decided to build a massive new battery complex at Waikino called the Victoria Stamping Battery. Construction started in 1897 and ore crushing began the following year. During its 54 years of operation the plant was continually modified and improved until it closed in 1952. The ore from the mine was conveyed to the battery by an 8km tramway known as ‘the rakeline’.

Look out for wasps in late summer.

The Mine still operates in Waihi (approx 3km away) in a huge open cast mine. A must to stop at and have a look at while you're in the area.
