Geocache Description:

This cache is on the Bosworth Trail in Whitwick.

It is suitable for wheelchairs, (up to the last few feet) pushchairs, children and animals.

It is next to a hard surfaced footpath and is easily accesible for most users.

There is a short incline if you go from one direction (hence the rating being 1.5 instead of 1) but it is still manageable for all.

Whitwick railway station was built by the Charnwood Forest Company, serving the Charnwood Forest Railway, and was officially opened with the rest of the completed line on April 16, 1883. Following the closure of passenger traffic (aside from a few specials and other organised events) in 1931, the station building became a blacksmiths. Following total line closure in 1963, the history of the building is more difficult to chart. However, it is apparent that the waiting rooms and other facilities on platform level were demolished. In the mid-1970s the Whitwick Historical Group was created, with the old station building becoming their home.

The building is situated close to the village's Market Place, which is essentially the centre of the village, on North Street.

The trackbed between Coalville (starting at Morrisons) and Whitwick (terminating just past Whitwick Station) has been turned into a public right of way. This passes the station building and the remains of the platform, which sadly, although intact, is overgrown and unkempt. The original staircase which gave passengers access from the road above to the platform was kept in use until the 1990s, however following persistent vandalism and worries over the structure's safety, the decision was taken to demolish it. All that remains now is the landing at the road entrance.

This is my first cache, hopefully the coordinates will be reasonably accurate and people will actually find it! I hope so, I've only been doing this a few days, it's all very exciting!

You're looking for a small clip top box with a log inside and the usual nik-naks.

You can park at 52.44'0932 N, 1.21'4251 W for a pleasant tree lined 1km stroll (there are also a couple of other caches very close to this location so you could do them all in one go) or at 52.44'31.93 N, 1.21'22.45 W for a quick 150m dash. If you go for the dash, it may be slightly more tricky for wheelchair users as there is a bit of a hill to get up, it's only short though.

Although this footpath is quite busy during the day you should find plenty of opportunities to hunt for this and not get spotted. Beware of the often-manned sitting area opposite the cache - Have a good look around you first :)

Greg :)
