Gimli was a stouthearted and loyal Dwarf. His father Gloin had been one of Bilbo Baggins' companions on the quest to the Lonely Mountain, and Gimli was a member of the Fellowship that accompanied Frodo Baggins on the quest to destroy the One Ring. Gimli overcame his suspicion of Elves as he grew to admire Galadriel and formed a lasting friendship with Legolas, earning him the name Elf-friend.

According to the Red Book of Westmarch, after Aragorn's death as King of the Reunited Kingdom in Fourth Age 120 Gimli (then very old) travelled with Legolas into the West, becoming the first Dwarf to visit the Undying Lands.
It is a little know fact that after this adventure Gimli travelled west in search of solitude. He found a peaceful grove of willow and poplar trees in the northern Mission Valley along the Rocky Mountains in the New World.
Here he spends his days contemplating his many adventures and awaiting the visits from eager geocachers, young and old.
