4-stage cache located in the Jug WMA. Expect to hike over 5 miles
total so bring plenty of water. You are looking for an ammo
can.
The Jug Wildlife Management Area, Tyler County, is comprised of
2075 acres of public land. Purchase of individual tracts of land
began in 1976, with an oddly-shaped bend of Middle Island Creek
giving the area its name. The creek travels approximately seven
miles on a nearly circular route before returning to almost the
same point, creating a jug-like piece of property. Several miles of
country road extend the length of the Jug, allowing access for fire
control, wildlife management and limited recreational use.
In the 1800s three mills were built in the area of the "jug handle"
where a natural raceway existed. Intense periodic flooding
accompanied by extreme water velocity, however, destroyed the mills
in 1858, 1873, and 1884. Stone from the 1884 Cocharan Mill was used
in a low-water bridge and can still be seen in the area.
In the early 1950s the State Road Commission and the West Virginia
Conservation Commission built a small dam and a low-water bridge
across the natural raceway. Its purpose was to provide better
access and prevent large amounts of water from causing extensive
erosion that would shortcut the entire stream flow of Middle Island
Creek across the neck and eliminate the seven-mile loop surrounding
the Jug. The low-water bridge is frequently flooded unless the
water level is low in the creek.
Congratulations to the Big Cat,
CTeam and 89sc for the FTF!
