My 30th hide.
This hut has special significance for me, it was one of the very
few alpine huts to survive that dreadful summer of 2003. And how
did it survive? I was one of the Light Tanker crew that did an
over-night shift with the aim of protecting the hut. I was a novice
fire-fighter and was a bit dismayed that I spent most of the night
with a drip-torch lighting fires rather than putting them out. In
fact, in the morning I had a ceremonial pee on a smoldering log
just so I felt that I helped stop the fires. We had no idea what
was going to hit Canberra in the coming days!
The hut was built in 1952 by Lindsay Pryor, to protect the
workers who were establishing the nearby Arberetum, which we also
saved.
There are 2 ways of approaching this cache. Park at Corin Dam
and follow the steep at first, trail up Stockyard Spur. MtBikerOZ
has a cache enroute and I also have a puzzle cache to tempt you..
Or, you can drive up to the Mt Franklin Road and park at the locked
gate. I think that is about a 5k walk/ride from the gate. My hike
from Corin Dam was over 16 k with a small detour to find a cache.
Be careful on the first 300 m climb out of Corin Dam, it is the
worst. I left the carpark at 9:00 am and was back by 4:00 pm and I
am extremely unfit but there was much snow on the ground to slow me
down.
For the first Few to Finds. I must admit that I did a shocking
hide. I didn't realise there was going to be snow everywhere. The
cache is hidden under a log but if you go up on a snow-less day, I
don't mind if you find a better spot but please let me know so I
can update the listing. There is an Agent Basil Pathtag for the FTF
and a Geocoin to help lure you up
and I probably forgot to leave a pen so best bring your
own.....as the serious cacher always does !
