Outdoor Nevada Geocache #4 - Old Ivanpah Ghosttown & Mining Camp


There are mines throughout Nevada. It's usually best to just stay out of 'em.

Located on the Nevada/California border (technically, California), the town of Ivanpah housed as many as 300 residents in the the early 1870's. Now, all that remains are roughly 15 or so stone ruins and several abandoned mines. Purple and blue glass shards litter the ground everywhere, and there are old cans and other ghost-town debris covering the entire area. Undoubtedly, you can walk for an hour or more just taking pictures and exploring the area. One of the Outdoor Nevada crew even found a piece of ancient Indian pottery on the ground near one of the springs.

Old Ivanpah (not to be confused with the ghost town of Ivanpah near Nipton) is easy to get to if you know how. The dirt road is well graded, and 2WD vehicles should have no problem - just keep an eye out for ruts in the road from the rainstorms that have frequented the area. You can drive close enough to the old townsite (and the cache) that a short 5 minute walk will allow you to look through all the ruins. If you have a truck or other high-clearance vehicle, you can follow the smaller dirt-road that begins at the water tank on the left side of the road. If not, it's a short 15 minute hike up the road to get to the Bidwell Mill ruins and Ivanpah springs.

I was tempted to call this the "geek cache" as there are a number of geeky items in the container. Video cards, a network card, a Soundblaster card, and some computer games can be had for those that dare to walk the amongst the ruins.
