Geocache Description:

Follow a forestry road into Cedar Creek Reservoir to find this cache. You're looking for a 1.6 litre black screwtop in an easy hide, reached from the track.

Placed with permission from City Forests. Access is permitted on weekends, public holidays and weekday evenings after 6pm; i.e. not during working hours.

And here is the kaikawaka or New Zealand cedar which gives the area its name:

Librocedrus bidwillii; Kaikawaka; New Zealand cedar. Small tree reaching 16 m with characteristic conical shape, but often much shorter and gnarled at high altitudes. Found in the lower half of the North Island and in the South Island, growing in a band near the bushline. Dunedin is the only city where kaikawaka grow within the city limits See Da Cedar; See Da Cache about a metre away at base of manuka

Park at the start of Cedar Farm Rd and walk up the forestry road. At the junction, take the left hand road and follow it past the southern side of the reservoir to the earth dam. Enjoy the view, then stroll over the bridge to the cache.

The forestry road generally follows the route of an old road between Port Chalmers and Waitati. Cedar Farm Rd went under the present reservoir and down Cedar Creek to meet the Mt Cargill Rd close to the horsetrough at Time For A Drink. The ruins of a hotel are beside the road partway up Cedar Creek (on Volco Trust property). There were five farms in this area in the 1920s. The reservoir was built in the 1950s to supplement the Rossville Reservoir in Sawyers Bay.

Don't be put off by the sign at the entrance "A Stiff Little Walk"; even Mrs Daywalk Senior (80 years old, with a heart condition) took only 35 minutes to walk uphill to the cache. You will easily do the return trip in an hour. This would be a good outing with children in a mountain buggy (obviously, watch them near the water).

You can do a full circuit around the reservoir, although the track is too narrow for strollers.
