A short hike on a spur trail through the woods.
Missouri is home to 7 types of woodpeckers: Downy, Pileated, Red Bellied, Red Headed, Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Northern Flicker and Hairy. They range in size from 6 to 19 inches. The hairy, downy, pileated and red-bellied woodpeckers reside here throughout the year. Northern flickers may migrate southward in the winter, and red-headed woodpeckers will migrate if not enough acorns to eat. The Missouri Department of Conservation website has a detailed description of these wonderful birds.
The cache is close to a fallen woodpecker "tree", one where birds searching for food have left large holes. It is on a spur trail that is not specifically named but easily accessible from Wolf Run Trail or the gravel loop road. You will only need to step a few feet off the trail.
Cache is small Tupperware type container started with a wooden coin, a quilt inchie, carabineers, compass and a log. BYOP

Shaw Nature Reserve is 2400 acres and home to tall grass prairies, forests, glades, woodlands, wetlands and a native plant garden. Along with environmental education, restoration and native plant horticulture there are also 14 miles of hiking trails.
The Nature Reserve is open from 8 AM to 8 PM during daylight savings time. It closes at 5PM otherwise.
All visitors are required to stop at the Visitor Center to register. Pets are not allowed. Fees for non-Missouri Botanical Garden members are $5, seniors & students $3, Children under 12 are free. The Pinetum Loop Rd and the Trail House Loop road are open to cars daily, weather permitting. Please visit the website for more information.
