The 2 story brick building with the double doors, was known as MaryKay’s Malt Shop in 1956. That’s my Mom’s name. Kids from the high school came for food, malts, and dancing…just like the soda shops in the movies. Mom and Dad ran the shop for over a year, and the 3 of us lived upstairs in the apartment “over the shop”. The only memories of living there I have are, (1) taking a penny out of Mommy’s purse, and going downstairs to the gumball machine. (2) someone bringing a pony to our backyard, and getting to sit on it. And (3) sitting on the kitchen countertop, while furniture was being taken out for our move to our brand new home on Apple Dr. The building is thought to have been built in the late 1700’s. In days gone by, it was a buggy shop, an I.O.O.F temple (Order of the Oddfellows), malt shop, and a hair salon. In the 1960’s it was converted to all living quarters. As it changed hands through the years, it has been remodeled with dropdown ceilings on both floors, but with some very original features preserved. Some lighting fixtures, some finely carved flooring, and a specific sink in the back. A pool has been added, as well as a 3 car garage. Farmersville is a great small town to be from. My parents and my siblings were all raised here. The population is just under 1000. While here, drive around the few blocks that make up the Village of Farmersville, to take in some of the history.
