Nel 1560 la famiglia Pucci, da sempre alleata dei Medici,ne divenne acerrima nemica quando Pandolfo de' Pucci venne estromesso dalla corte medicea sotto l' infamante accusa di immoralità.
Accecato dall' ira, Pandolfo volle vendicarsi ed assoldò dei sicari per assassinare Cosimo I.
Il piano era ben congegnato: appostati al piano terreno dietro la prima finestra di Palazzo Pucci, quella dell' angolo con Via de' Servi, i sicari avrebbero dovuto attendere il passaggio di Cosimo che si recava, come d'abitudine, alla Santissima Annunziata: se lo sarebbero trovato proprio di fronte e , senza essere visti, avrebbero avuto il tempo per aprire il fuoco.
Ma evidentemente i "servizi segreti" dei Medici dovevano funzionare piuttosto bene, tanto che il complotto venne scoperto e Pandolfo de' Pucci fu processato e condannato all' impiccagione dalle finestre del Bargello.
Cosimo I continuò a recarsi come sempre alla Santissima Annunziata, ma tutte le volte che transitava da quell' incrocio, memore dello scampato pericolo, non si sentiva più troppo sicuro.
Forse per prudenza, forse per scaramanzia, fece murare quella finestra, proprio come è rimasta ancora oggi.

In 1560 the Pucci family, always an ally of the Medici, became bitter enemies when Pandolfo de 'Pucci were ousted by the Medici court with the infamous accusation of immorality.
Blinded by 'anger, Pandolfo wanted revenge and hired assassins to murder Cosimo I.
The plan was well thought out: stationed on the ground floor behind the front window of the Palazzo Pucci, that located in the corner of Via de' Servi, the killers would have to await the passage of Cosimo, who was going as usual, to the Santissima Annunziata: staying there, without being seen, would have had time to open fire.
But evidently the "secret services" of the Medici had to work pretty well, so the plot was discovered and Pandolfo de 'Pucci was tried and sentenced to hanging from the windows of the Bargello.
Cosimo I continued to go as always to the Santissima Annunziata, but every time Ihe passed through from that intersection, mindful of the narrow escape, he no longer felt safe too.
Perhaps for caution, perhaps for luck, he walled the window, just as it remains today.
