Breathed
"Hardest artillery fighter the war produced"
Maj. James Breathed was born near present-day Berkeley Spring, WV.,
on December 15, 1838, and moved while young with his family to
Washington Co., Md. He attended St. James School in Lydia, where
his father John Breathed was headmaster. At age 21, he graduated
from the University of Maryland Medical School. During the Civil
War, he served as a lieutenant in the 1st Virginia Cavalry under
J.E.B. Stuart, and later as a major in Stuart's Horse
Artillery
Breathed so distinguished himself in the Battles
of Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania Court
House, and Yellow Tavern that Gen. Robert E. Lee regarded him as
"The hardest artillery fighter the war produced." he returned to
Hancock, Md., after the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia
at Appomattox Court House to live with his sister and practice
medicine.
His family was among the founders of St. Thomas
Episcopal Church.
Breathed's brother-in-law Robert Bridges, co-owner of the Round Top
Cement Mill, was the largest employer in Hancock during the
war.
His first cousin Dr. James Breathed Delaplane was also a physician
here, and his office stood on this site.
Maj. James Breathed died on February 14, 1870, and is buried in St.
Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery.

The listed coordinates will take you to this
civil war marker located along Main street.
Enjoy this little square where you can read up on
Hancock and the RailTrail features as well as take a break and
enjoy the Fountain and Gardens.

You will locate the coordinates to Stage 2 at the
Marker in Stage One.
You can walk or ride to Stage 2 as it is One
Block East and One Block North but note that the One Block North is
All Up Hill if walking.
NOTE: STAGE 2 and 3 are DAYLIGHT ONLY and No
containers or items will be near any Grave Marker, Please respect
any and all items inside the Cemetery at ALL times.
At Stage 2 you will locate the Grave Stone of Dr.
James Breathed M.D. , Born February 13, 1838 and Passed February
14, 1870.
To locate Stage 3 (Final location) you will use a
technique known as Projecting a Waypoint.
While Standing and facing the Grave Marker (where the writing is )
you will Project a Waypoint at ( 32* TRUE and a distance of
445'.)
Please make sure that your Compass has been Calibrated before
attempting to project.
The FINAL Location will bring you to a smaller
than a Regular but bigger than a small Sized Cache hidden inside a
larger host that is Cammo'd to match its surroundings.
